The red classic and brown classic
tabby were accepted for Championship status in 1906. In 1933, CFA's first Grand
Champion was a red classic tabby imported from England. In 1961 the blue tabby
was accepted and in 1964 the cream tabby. There are two tabby patterns, classic
(1906) and mackerel (1964). We breed brown, blue, and red tabbies in both
patterns. The patched tabby, ( "sex linked to
color" always female), is like that of the parti-colors, except with tabby
markings. They were accepted in the mid 70's. We breed brown patched, ( a brown
tabby with red patches ), and blue patched ( a blue tabby with cream patches). There are 13 colors making up this division.
The Legend of the Tabby "M"Early on the morning that the Christ Child was born, Mary was tired from labor, and Joseph was out searching for food for his family. The Holy Baby started to cry and nothing seemed to console him. The stable animals looked worried as they did not know how to quiet the tiny babe. The cat responded, "I think I know what to do" And so the cat crawled into the crude manger and began purring. The Holy Babe listened to the quiet, happy sound and fell into a restful sleep. As a gift, Mary touched the cat on the head and said " For soothing my baby and purring him to sleep so that I might rest, you shall forever carry this mark," And that is why today that tabbies have an "M" on their forehead, for the world to see.
